I started Cynmarie Concessions years ago with the thought of being more green than a traditional food and drink vendor. Making small changes in food vending can overall have a positive impact on the environment. Learn how I green up my concessions:
- I never offer beverages that are from a fountain drink machine. To me, the wax cups, plastic lids and straws are a waste to the environment. By offering cans and bottles, these items are more easily recycled and accepted in mainstream recycling in 52 states!
- My"fun cups" for kids provide children something to re-use later, or a momento from the fair that they can keep, whether it be to drink from or as a pencil holder later down the road!
- Lemonade and fruit drinks for adults are served in HDPE or #2 plastic cups which are accepted in mainstream recycling in most states. This plastic is the most often downcycled into plastic lumber, tables, roadside curbs, benches, truck cargo liners, trash receptacles and more!
- I do not use styrofoam products, only paper boats, plates, or fry cups which are bio-degradable and easily broken down into landfills or trash piles.
- Upon request, I even use CORN CUPS which are plastic look and feel but can compost naturally into the environmet with no harmful chemicals!
There are of course some things in food vending like plastic bread bags that come from bread, or foil wraps** for sandwiches that sometimes can't be avoided. There is a balance between food safety and environmentalism. **They do make paper sandwich wraps are okay for some things, but because they are thin are still scoffed at by most customers. I feel with small changes I'm headed into the right direction and I can feel good about that.
